Saturday, July 14th, All Day - On the Road in the World

An international celebration of Beat writer Jack Kerouac in the writer's hometown: a Kerouac era car show and wiffle ball tourney; multi–lingual readings of On the Road in local pubs; walking tours of Kerouac's Lowell. See the writer's influence on urban culture through local jazz, poetry and R&B musicians.

Programs include:


  • 10-11:30am Mystic Jack:  Sites of Visions of Gerard

    Join Roger Brunelle in touring Kerouac’s childhood places that inspired this work.  The tour will begin in front of St. Louis de France church, at the corner of Sixth and Boisvert streets, Lowell.

  • 10am-6pm Kerouac Classic Wiffle Ball Tourney

    Come and participate to this popular game, born in the 1960s as a backyard and picnic play, and soon become one of the most popular and widely practiced sports all over the world. Come to the Kerouac Park on Bridge Street in Downtown Lowell.
  • 11am-3pm Hudson Car Show

    The show features 24 classic Hudsons like the one Kerouac drove cross-country. Come and see cars with the 40s and 50s famous design. Parking lot across from the Lowell High School Auditorium, 50 Father Morissette Blvd.
  • 1pm Slide show and talk on Kerouac's route

    Talk with Dan McNichol, author of The Roads that Built America, the fascinating story of the largest engineering project the world has ever known. Join us in this discussion of the U.S. Interstate System, the most incredible road system in the world that made possible the development of the U.S. suburban way of life. At the Boott Cotton Mills Museum.
  • 2pm A conversation with Al Hinkle

    Al is the prototype for the "Ed Dunkel" character in On the Road. Come and hear Al Hinkle’s tales of his friendship with Jack Kerouac and many other stories that Jack never told. Narrated by Stephen Edington at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum.
  • 5–10pm Kerouac Pubs of Lowell Tour

    Visit Kerouac’s most favorite pubs in Lowell that have maintained the flavor of the 40s and 50s. Enjoy live music and Kerouac readings. Mike Wurm from the Lowell National Historical Park will guide the tour. The program details follow.
